Alectryon excelsus, commonly known as titoki, is a shiny-leaved tree native to New Zealand, where it occurs in coastal and lowland forests. It is found throughout most of the North Island and from Banks Peninsula to central Westland in the South Island.
An attractive tree with glossy mid green pinnate leaves, generally with serrated edges. The fresh young growth is paler in colour with a reddish tinge. Scarlet seed capsules split to reveal shiny black seed, like precious jewels. Best in semi sheltered position, in full sun, with good humus rich free draining soil. A fantastic sheltered avenue tree. Frost tender when young, hardy with age.
